Prabhjeet Singh Joins OpenAI as Managing Director, India

Prabhjeet Singh has joined OpenAI as Managing Director, India, taking responsibility for the company’s India business at a time when AI adoption is accelerating across consumers, enterprises, developers, and startups.

Singh confirmed the move in a recent update, saying he had joined OpenAI to lead its India business after spending time with the team in San Francisco. He described the opportunity as being focused not only on AI adoption but also on translating that adoption into broader, lasting impact across the country.

In his new role, Singh will oversee areas including consumer growth, enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, regulatory engagement, and operations. He will be OpenAI’s senior-most leader in India and report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for Asia Pacific.

Singh joins OpenAI following his tenure as President of Uber India and South Asia, where he led the company's regional operations. Earlier in his career, he worked at McKinsey & Company and Lehman Brothers, building experience across business strategy, transformation, and financial services.

His appointment comes as India becomes an increasingly important market for AI companies. OpenAI has identified the country as a priority market and has been expanding its presence through local operations and planned offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru.

For the marketing and technology ecosystem, the development is significant because AI adoption is moving beyond experimentation into areas such as customer engagement, productivity, software development, enterprise operations, and content creation.

Singh also highlighted the next stage of AI adoption in India: making advanced AI more accessible and useful for businesses, developers, startups, educators, and consumers. He noted that ChatGPT usage in India has doubled compared with the previous year, while emphasizing that the broader opportunity remains at an early stage.

The appointment therefore places Singh at the intersection of AI adoption, enterprise technology, partnerships, and market development as India’s role in the global AI ecosystem continues to evolve.
